Religious of the Sacred Heart of Florence

The Society of the Sacred Heart, a monastic contemplative order dedicated to the education of the youth, was founded in Paris, in 1800, by Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat. The Society opened a boarding school in Florence in 1881 for the Christian instruction and education of young girls.

The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Florence today are a reformed branch of the order founded by Saint Madeleine Sophie. In 1992, the Church recognized The community of The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Florence as an independent House, “sui iuris” of Pontifical Right confided to the special care of the Archbishop of Florence as provided in can. 615.
